DJs rely on a lot of essential equipment to perform, so if you want to deliver an incredible audio experience at your next event, then you need a reliable DJ mixer, a professional-grade or at least half decent DJ controller, a laptop, an excellent set of effects, and so much more.

One of the most important decisions of all is to pick the best DJ speakers for your needs. So doing your research is critical.

Your speakers ensure that your audience can hear the music that you play the way it’s intended. Without a good set of DJ speakers, none of your hard work will come through.

Unfortunately, many DJs get so focused on looking for the right Pro DJ controller, DJ mixers, and decks, that they forget to search for the correct speakers. Good news though, we’re here to help.

We’ve been lucky to test a lot of DJ speakers over the years. Sometimes we get blown away by a single product, and sometimes it’s a close call. This time round though, we have been thoroughly impressed by the Adam Audio T7V DJ speakers.

In our opinion, they offer the most of everything at an affordable price range. Things like frequency range, connectivity options, speak configuration, and tweeter specs – all these are pro quality at an extremely great price.

To start, having a frequency range of 39Hz – 25kHz without the use of a subwoofer, is just fantastic. It sounds thumpy, and offers a serious punch for those more bass-heavy tracks as well as offering clear, transparent, and sparkling high-end too.

Best DJ Speakers
Image: DJ Tech Reviews

Secondly, the connectivity. While pretty much all DJ speakers offer XLR inputs, it’s somewhat rare to get RCA inputs too. Meaning, you can extend the range of gear you wish to plug into these bad boys – such as turntables.

Lastly, the price. At a super affordable price of just $499 for a PAIR, yes a pair, these are very good value for money. Heck, you may even be able to pick them even cheaper second-hand too, so definitely keep an eye out on eBay and Craigslist too.

The Product Guide

This is such an open-ended question as there are so many variables to consider. However, if you are just starting off we would definitely recommend the Adam Audio T7V powered monitors. They sound great, pack a punch, look awesome, and are extremely well-priced.

1. Adam Audio T7V – Overall Best DJ Speaker

Specifications

Price$249.99 (Single)
Frequency Response39Hz – 25kHz
Speaker Configuration2-way
Driver Size7-inch
Tweeter TypeRibbon
ConnectivityRCA, XLR

If you’re looking for a DJ speaker and/or studio monitor that is sturdy, stylish, sounds great, and is fantastic value for money, then the Adam Audio T7V is the best choice on the market today.

These speakers have a superb frequency response of 39Hz to 25kHz so you won’t be missing out on any frequencies in your music.

Weighing in at a chunky 7.1kg (15.7 lbs.) they are certainly not the lightest speakers in the market, but don’t see that as a bad thing – You want speakers that aren’t going to scoot all over the place when you’re playing your tunes nice and loud.

Also, this is often a sign of premium materials that have been used such as the wood cabinetry and density of the metal coils.

What is the power output like? Decent – you have a healthy 70W on offer with a split of 50W for the woofer and 20W for the tweeter. The crossover hits around the 2600Hz mark.

You also have some nice and simple tuning options for the high frequencies and low frequencies with both ends getting a 2db boost or reduction of your choice.

We also happen to think that these are some sexy looking speakers too. Not too over-designed, and not too simple looking with that eye-catching yellow tweeter at the top, they stand out just enough. Very sleek.

As for dimensions, these speakers are 34.8cm (13.7″) tall, 21.1cm (8.3″) wide, and 29.2cm (11.5″) deep. They aren’t the most compact units going, but as mentioned, this is to be expected for speaks of this quality.

So, all this for under $300? This is why the Adam Audio T7V are our best overall DJ speaker on the market today.

6 Things To Consider Before Buying

So, what kind of things should you be looking for in your killer speakers?

Well, your exact needs will vary depending on what you want to accomplish. However, there are a few elements worth considering outlined below:

  1. Studio Speakers/ PA: Studio speakers are designed primarily accurate playback at moderate and low volumes. These speakers work best for studio use and aren’t designed to play music at loud volumes. Alternatively, PA speakers can play at much louder volumes, and support venues with bigger crowds.
  2. Bass Sound: Bass-heavy speakers can produce a bass line that’s easy to hear. The bass generated by speakers can be very disturbing when your subwoofer starts acting up. This disturbance happens due to a high power supply in a strange set up or a lackluster design. With that in mind, bass is an essential factor when searching for speakers.
  3. High frequencies: Speakers need high frequencies that sound clear and crisp. This means that you can deliver excellent clarity and fantastic audibility to your audience.
  4. Stereo Fold: The Stereo Fold should be good enough to differentiate the various elements that you put into a track. You can determine how well your elements are placed into the mix too. Bass, dialogues, ambiance, and other aspects of a song appear more clearly with stereo fold solutions.
  5. Range: They need to have a varied selection of frequencies so that they can reproduce all of the sounds in the DJ track. They should have both a low-range woofer and low frequencies and tweeters for the higher frequencies.
  6. Power: The wattage of your DJ speaker will make a massive difference to your outcomes too. A 400-watt DJ speaker is fine for a home studio solution. Larger venues might need more watts. If you want a loud system but are conscious about the neighbours, then check out our article on soundproofing your setup here: How To Soundproof a DJ Home Studio

Portability and Compatibility

Best DJ Speakers: Portability and Compatibility
Image: IK Multimedia

Another major point to consider when you’re searching for compact speakers is how transportable do you want the system to be. Traditional PA systems consist of kits of modular best-of-breed options. This means that you need tons of separate items for individual functions.

Unfortunately, while this diversity means that you can build the perfect sound system for your needs, it also means that you have a lot more to transport.

The more items you need to carry around, the more work it takes to make the most out of your sets.

The good news is that there are compact options out there that are easy to transport. However, these tools are often smaller and closer to a home use or studio use speaker than the ones that you would adopt for a venue.

Additionally, if you can find a PA that’s big enough for your venue, you also might not have as many customization options with compact tools.

DJ Speaker Budget Considerations

DJ Speaker Budget Considerations
Image: Adam Audio

Although the budget shouldn’t be the only concern when making your DJ speaker choices, it will be a significant consideration for most people. Whether you’re just starting as a DJ or just pursuing new opportunities, you’ll have a limited budget.

Decide on a budget and look for a set of speakers in the bracket that’s suitable for you. Remember that the lower your budget is, the fewer options you’ll have. The most advanced technology requires a bigger investment.

Cheap speakers won’t always be able to deliver the best quality of sound in a live setup. Before you buy anything:

  • Check the bass: Does the bass sound controlled and tight, or is it muddy? The speakers need to produce a great bass sound.
  • Is the stereo fold good enough: Can you tell the different elements of the tracks apart? Speakers should allow you to distinguish the details in your track.
  • How do the high frequencies sound: Since you’re listening to these frequencies at high volume, they must sound crisp, not harsh.
  • Can you unlock new parts of your tracks: Can you hear elements that you never noticed before in your tracks?
  • How big are the speakers: Sizes can massively vary depending on your budget options. Size often matters, as bigger speakers can deliver more power.
  • What connections are available: Do you connect your studio monitors through USB connections, digital solutions, phono, XLR, or basic jacks? Are these speakers intended to be hooked directly into your audio interface?

Our Final Verdict

With a little luck, the reviews above will have given you an insight into the kind of factors to consider when buying the right DJ speakers for your DJ set-up.

There are tons of great speakers out there to choose from, each with its own pros and cons to think about. However, who is the top dog when it comes to the best speakers?

Best DJ Speakers: The Verdict
Image: Ableton

The Adam Audio T7V stands out as the best overall option for DJs, offering excellent sound quality, power, and build. This speaker features a 7-inch woofer and Adam Audio’s signature ribbon tweeter, delivering a wide frequency range with exceptional clarity, making it perfect for accurate monitoring during performances and mixing.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option that doesn’t compromise on performance, the Presonus Eris E3.5 is an excellent choice. This compact 3.5-inch speaker is perfect for DJs who need a portable solution without breaking the bank, providing a clear and balanced sound.

For those seeking a top-of-the-line speaker with exceptional performance and features, the Yamaha DXR8 MKII is our premium pick. Boasting an impressive 1100W of Class-D power, this 8-inch 2-way speaker ensures your music will be heard loud and clear, with advanced features like the D-CONTOUR multi-band dynamic processor and versatile connectivity options.

How many watts is a good DJ speaker?

For smaller venues or home practice sessions, a speaker with a power output of around 50-100 watts may suffice. However, for larger events or venues, you may require a speaker with a power output of 300 watts or more to ensure that your music is heard clearly and with enough volume. Premium speakers like the Yamaha DXR8 MKII, which boasts 1100W of Class-D power, can provide exceptional performance even in more demanding settings.

Who makes the best sound quality speakers?

Determining the best sound quality speakers depends on individual preferences and specific needs, as different brands excel in various aspects of audio performance. Among the brands mentioned with our full list, each has a unique approach to speaker design and technology, catering to different applications and budgets.

Adam Audio is known for its ribbon tweeter technology, delivering detailed and accurate high frequencies, while Yamaha has a reputation for producing well-balanced and reliable speakers like the HS series. Pioneer DJ, on the other hand, is highly regarded for its DJ-specific speakers, such as the VM series, designed to optimize audio performance in DJ environments.

Brands like QSC and Electro-Voice are respected for their high-quality, powerful PA systems, while Mackie, Presonus, and Behringer offer a range of budget-friendly options with good sound quality. KRK and IK Multimedia are popular choices for compact studio monitors, catering to those with limited space or requiring portable solutions.

What speakers do I need to DJ a party?

It all depends on the size of the event, the venue, and your desired sound pressure level. Here are some recommendations based on different party sizes:

Small party (up to 50 people) – For smaller gatherings, such as house parties or intimate events, a pair of powered speakers with an output of around 50-100 watts each should suffice. In this situation, speakers like the Presonus Eris E3.5 or IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors can provide clear and balanced sound without being overpowering.

Medium-sized party (50-150 people) – For medium-sized events, you’ll need a more powerful speaker system to ensure your music reaches all attendees. A pair of speakers with an output of 300-500 watts each, such as the Yamaha HS8 or the Pioneer DJ VM-70, should provide enough volume and sound quality to keep the party going.

Large party (150+ people) – For larger events or venues, you’ll need a more robust speaker system with higher wattage to cover a wider area and deliver the necessary sound pressure level. In this case, consider speakers like the Yamaha DXR8 MKII or the QSC K10.2, which offer high power output and excellent sound quality. You may also want to add a subwoofer to enhance the low-end response, ensuring your music has the necessary bass impact.
