What it is
The ew IEM G4 is a wireless in-ear monitoring set from Sennheiser, part of the fourth generation of its evolution wireless range (Sennheiser product page). Sennheiser launched G4 at the NAMM Show in January 2018, with sets available from April 2018, as the successor to the G3 generation, and said every G4 system is compatible with earlier evolution wireless generations.
The set pairs the SR IEM G4 transmitter, a half-rack stereo unit in a metal housing with an OLED display, with the EK IEM G4 metal bodypack receiver. Two balanced XLR/6.3 mm combo inputs take a stereo mix from a mixer's monitor sends, or a mono feed on the left input, and loop outputs pass the signal on. The receiver has a lockable 3.5 mm headphone jack, adaptive diversity reception, an adjustable limiter and squelch, and runs about 4 to 6 hours on two AA cells, depending on volume.
It works in the UHF band, in one of 12 frequency ranges between 470 and 865 MHz, with up to 42 MHz of bandwidth, 1,680 selectable frequencies and up to 16 compatible channels. Transmitter and receiver sync over infrared, RF output is switchable up to 50 mW where local rules allow, and Sennheiser quotes a range of up to 100 m. The transmitter's Ethernet port connects to Sennheiser's Wireless Systems Manager software. Buyers need a frequency range that is legal where they play.
The box holds the transmitter, the receiver, IE 4 earphones, two AA batteries, a rod antenna, the GA 3 rackmount set and the quick and safety guides. The BA 2015 rechargeable pack and its charger are sold separately.
