Status, October 2026: current. Phase sells the Essential pack directly; the Phase Pro it has announced is not yet on sale.
What it is
Phase is a wireless timecode controller for turntable DJs who use DVS. It was developed by MWM, the Paris company behind edjing and the Mixfader, and is now sold by Phase SAS (Phase product page). It was first shown at NAMM 2018 and funded by crowdfunding, and the first units shipped in 2019 after the launch slipped from November 2018.
Instead of a needle reading control vinyl, a small remote sits on top of the record on each turntable. Each remote tracks the platter's movement with 3-axis accelerometers and two gyroscopes and sends it over a proprietary 2.4 GHz radio link to a receiver, which Phase rates at 5 ms latency. The receiver turns that movement into a timecode signal on two RCA outputs for a DVS mixer or sound card, or, with some DJ software, talks to the laptop directly as an HID device over USB. It works with Serato DJ Pro, rekordbox, Traktor Pro, VirtualDJ and djay PRO, and with any turntable.
The Essential pack holds two remotes, the receiver, a USB cable, two RCA cables and four magnetic stickers that hold the remotes on a record; Phase also describes an Ultimate pack with four remotes for longer sets. Each remote runs for up to ten hours on its lithium-ion battery and charges on the receiver, which takes USB power from a computer or adapter. The free Phase Manager app for macOS and Windows sets up and updates the system. The receiver measures 124 x 74 x 24 mm and weighs 223 g, and each remote weighs 18 g. Phase gives a two-year warranty.
