This is the default first controller for a reason: all ten professional reviews recommend it, and owners repeat that it is easy to set up and learn on. Its limits are the price of that simplicity: one RCA output, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a plastic shell. If you are learning, buy it when the price is near its recorded low; if you plan to play out soon, look one step up.

What it is

The DDJ-FLX4 is a two-channel DJ controller from AlphaTheta's Pioneer DJ brand, announced on 8 November 2022 (Pioneer DJ product page). It takes its layout from the DDJ-400 and added two features new to Pioneer DJ: Smart Fader, which adjusts volume, bass and BPM as you move the faders, and Smart CFX, which applies combinations of effects from one knob. AlphaTheta added the smaller DDJ-FLX2 in October 2024.

It runs rekordbox on Mac and Windows with Performance mode unlocked, Serato DJ Lite free with Serato DJ Pro as a paid upgrade, djay since March 2023, and Traktor Play since October 2025. rekordbox for iOS and Android connects over USB-C or Bluetooth, and VirtualDJ needs a paid licence. It is not standalone: it needs a computer, phone or tablet.

Each deck has a jog wheel, play, cue and beat sync buttons, a tempo slider and eight back-lit rubber pads with modes for Hot Cue, Keyboard, two Pad FX banks, Beat Jump, Beat Loop and Sampler. The mixer has trim, a three-band EQ, a CFX knob, cue and level meters per channel, plus master level, mic level and headphone mix.

The built-in sound card outputs the master on RCA and headphones on a 3.5 mm jack, and a 1/4" mic input is sent over USB with the music for streaming. Two USB-C ports carry the connection and power: a computer powers it over USB, while a phone or tablet setup needs a 9 V, 3 A adapter or battery. It measures 482 x 272.8 x 59.2 mm and weighs 2.1 kg. The box holds a USB cable and paperwork.
