What to Do If You Spill a Drink on Your DJ Gear

Pull the power and every cable straight away, shut the laptop down, wipe off what you can, and leave everything switched off somewhere dry with airflow for at least a day, with no heat, compressed air or rice, as Apple advises. A mixer or controller that liquid got into needs a service check before you use it again, per Pioneer DJ's safety instructions, and neither Apple's nor AlphaTheta's standard warranty covers liquid damage.

In the first minute

  1. Cut the power at the plug, not the power button. Pioneer DJ's safety precautions for the CDJ-3000X say its power switch doesn't completely shut off power from the outlet, and that the power cord is the main disconnect, so pull the mains lead out of every wet unit. A controller powered over USB takes its power from the laptop, so unplug that cable too. When this is done, no wet unit is connected to the mains.
  2. Unplug the laptop and everything connected to it. Apple's guidance for a wet MacBook is to unplug every cable and accessory, unplug the other end of each cable as well, and not reconnect anything until both the Mac and the accessory are completely dry.
  3. Shut the laptop down. Apple says to shut a wet Mac down immediately and disconnect it from all power sources. When this is done, the screen is off and the charger is out.
  4. Get the gear away from the drink. Move the laptop and anything you can lift off the wet surface, and wipe the outside with a dry cloth. Pioneer DJ's instructions say to clean its units only with a dry cloth.

If the mixer was carrying the sound, the music stops when you unplug it. That is the right call: Pioneer DJ's warning that its equipment isn't waterproof is there to prevent fire and electric shock.

Drying out

Apple publishes drying steps for a wet MacBook, written for liquid in or around its USB-C ports:

  • Wait at least a day with it switched off, then check the ports look dry before powering on.
  • If it still detects liquid, shut it down again and leave it in a dry area with airflow for another day.
  • No external heat and no compressed air. That rules out a hairdryer, a heater and a can of air.
  • Nothing pushed into the ports, including cotton swabs and paper towel.
  • No bag of rice. Apple says rice particles can damage the Mac.

Apple's steps don't include opening the case. Current Mac laptops have Liquid Contact Indicators, which show a repairer that a machine has been exposed to liquid, per Apple.

None of the DJ hardware makers checked for this page publishes drying steps for a mixer, controller or player; Pioneer DJ's instructions go straight to servicing, below. Until a wet unit has been checked, keep it unplugged.

Before you switch anything back on

Mixers, controllers and players. Pioneer DJ's safety instructions say to refer all servicing to qualified service personnel, and that servicing is required when liquid has been spilled into the unit. If a drink ran under the faders, buttons or jog wheels, contact the maker or an authorised service centre before you plug the unit back in.

Opening it yourself. Check the warranty before you pick up a screwdriver:

  • AlphaTheta's European warranty excludes products repaired or modified by third parties it hasn't authorised, and damage caused by liquids.
  • Native Instruments' terms say the warranty lapses if you modify a product, or have someone else modify it, without its agreement, where that makes fixing a defect impossible or unreasonably difficult.

Laptops. Apple's guidance is that a Mac with liquid damage might need service, and its liquid damage page links to its service request page.

What the warranty covers

MakerLiquid damage under the standard warrantyOptional cover
AppleNot covered by the one-year limited warranty or the AppleCare Protection PlanAn AppleCare plan for Mac adds unlimited accidental damage protection, subject to a service fee
AlphaTheta (Pioneer DJ)Excluded in its European warranty termsAlphaTheta Care Pro+ adds liquid spill cover; AlphaTheta Care Pro doesn't
Native InstrumentsIts published terms don't mention liquidNone found on its site

AlphaTheta Care is sold through the US Pioneer DJ Store, runs for three years, and has to be bought within six months of buying the gear from an authorised reseller. Only some models are eligible; the store lists them. Native Instruments no longer repairs, returns or replaces some older hardware, including the Traktor Kontrol S2, S4 and X1 MK1 and the Traktor Audio 2, 4 and 8DJ, per its end-of-service list, so a spill on one of those means a third-party repair or a replacement.

Equipment insurance is the other route. DJ insurance explains what equipment cover pays for and how it differs from public liability.

Keeping drinks off the setup

Pioneer DJ's manuals say not to put any container of liquid near its equipment or expose it to dripping or splashing. At a gig that means:

  • Keep your own drink on a different surface from the gear, ideally lower than it, and with a lid.
  • Ask whoever books you to keep guests' drinks off the DJ table.
  • Get the laptop off the table. A laptop stand lifts it clear of anything that pools on the surface.

How this page is made

Every step on this page comes from the maker's own published guidance, read on 13 October 2026: Apple's support pages for a wet MacBook and for liquid damage, Pioneer DJ's safety precautions for the CDJ-3000X, the AlphaTheta Help Center's warranty terms and AlphaTheta Care page, and Native Instruments' warranty terms and end-of-service list. Where a maker doesn't say something, such as whether to open a unit, the page doesn't fill the gap. We haven't tested liquid on any gear. The methodology explains how the site works.
