The Internet’s Opinion

From 3 professional reviews: a fair amount of evidence.

Two of the three reviews found recommend it for its breadth and studio demonstrations; the third finds it well made but hard to place, too advanced for total beginners and familiar to experienced producers.

Our take

Rory TassellWritten from the sources on this page, not from a loan unit.

Two of three reviews recommend it. Codeless and Learnopoly both praise broad coverage, from writing a track to mastering, the business and live shows, and both value the hands-on studio demonstrations. Both also say it assumes some production knowledge, and Learnopoly finds little new for experienced producers. No owner reviews were found. It comes as part of a MasterClass membership, so take it if other classes there interest you too.

What it is

Status, October 2026: current. MasterClass still offers the class as part of its membership.

What it is

deadmau5 Teaches Electronic Music Production is an online video course from MasterClass, taught by Joel Zimmerman, the producer who performs as deadmau5. MasterClass released it in November 2016, when it was sold as a single class of more than 20 video lessons with projects and critiques (Synthtopia).

The current version has 23 video lessons running 5 hours 24 minutes, plus a downloadable course workbook. MasterClass lists the topics as theory and practice, building a home studio, melody and arrangement, synthesis and modular, effects, beats, song structure, remixing, mixing and mastering, a career in music, the music business and live shows. One lesson is a case study of the mastering chain for his track "Snowcone". The course is about producing electronic music rather than DJ technique, though MasterClass lists crafting a setlist among the skills it teaches.

The class is no longer sold on its own. It comes with a MasterClass membership, billed annually with a 30-day money-back guarantee, which includes more than 200 other classes, among them Armin van Buuren Teaches Dance Music. Lessons stream in a web browser and in MasterClass apps for iOS, Android, Amazon devices and Roku.

There is nothing physical to buy: the workbook is a download, and no software or sample pack is listed as part of the class.
