In this article, we’ll be taking a look at the Pioneer S-DJ50X speaker. Though only coming as a single speaker, the S-DJ50X has a lot of responsibility thanks to the Pioneer DJ name.

Thankfully, while hardly a perfect speaker set, for what it’s worth, the S-DJ50X certainly does its fair share in presenting itself as a viable and legitimate option for just about anyone starting out or in need of an additional speaker setup for their current collection.

Is the Pioneer DJ S-DJ50X Speaker any Good?

Between its compact size, lightweight frame, solid sound quality, and variety of input options, the S-DJ50X do more than enough to be the perfect starter DJ monitor for anyone legitimately interested in jumping into the music and DJing world.

First Impressions – The Physical Build

Upon first impression, I have to say that I wasn’t super impressed with what I saw from the Pioneer DJ S-DJ50X. I’ve always been an avid fan of Pioneer DJ and their DJ products, but, at least from a design perspective, I was personally a bit let down.

It was only after spending a bit of time inspecting and going over it that I realized that it wasn’t half bad.

Physically, the speaker is surprisingly durable. I wouldn’t recommend dropping it or kicking it, but it’s made from some pretty good materials to the point that I expect that reasonable care should last for a long time.

In addition, the next thing that stands out the most is its compact and lightweight build.

Despite being durable enough to keep going for a while, it’s insanely easy to cart away with you anywhere you want to go.

Barely weighing over 14 pounds, you can pretty much throw this on a shelf or even on your desk for a more immersive sound experience.

The Specs

The Pioneer S-DJ50X is a very compact and lightweight speaker with a woofer size of 5 inches and a 1-inch tweeter size.

The S-DJ50X has a max SPL of 107 dB and a frequency range that goes from 50Hz on the low-end and 20kHz at the higher end.

The Design

From a design perspective, there isn’t a lot to write home about. Is it as “boring” as other studio monitor speakers?

Not necessarily.

However, that doesn’t automatically mean it’s anything altogether special. In reality, it’s only slightly more memorable than the average speaker design, and that’s due to the woofer’s contrasting color scheme and the tweeter’s smaller and interesting shape.

Outside of that, there’s not a lot that is so compelling or impressive.

Still, it’s not the worse looking speaker in the world. And when you consider what you’re buying it for, that’s a compliment.

Taking A Deeper Look – Features & Sound Quality

Now, since we’ve had a chance to check out the physical build of the Pioneer DJ S-DJ50X, let’s now take a look at some of the speaker’s different features and what it has to offer.

Sound Quality

One of the better aspects of the S-DJ50X is its surprisingly impressive sound quality.

While not the best, when you consider the size of the speaker as well as its price range, it becomes a bit amazing how well it does overall.

It has a largely flat sound that doesn’t get too muddied up the same way other speakers might. Similarly, the frequency range is well enough that the low, middle, and high-end frequencies all run fairly well.

I’d go as far as to say that, thanks to its Bi-amp circuit, the speaker can pump out a pretty strong bass despite its small size.

Yeah, you’ll probably need a subwoofer if you want that hard-hitting intensity, or are trying to fill up an entire room, but for 99% of the people getting it, you should be fine.

Features Offered

Connection Options

One of the places where the S-DJ50X shines is in its varied connection input options. I’ll be honest here and say that, in the vast majority of cases, speakers of this size or at this price range don’t have a huge number of input options.

Here, Pioneer DJ has outfitted the S-DJ50X with the full gamut of connections. From the RCA to the XLR, to the TRS input, you’ve got it all.

Again, this is rarely the case, which easily makes the S-DJ50X something to consider for most people just from that perspective.

Auto Standby & Heat Sink

The S-DJ50X comes with an automatic standby mode. This works to save electricity for the speaker as well as prolong its overall lifespan.

The feature activates whenever the studio monitor has been inactive for over 25 minutes.

On the other side, the S-DJ50X also has a reliable heat sink mechanism that similarly works to reduce the amount of strain put on the speakers.

It works by draining the accumulated heat from other running parts of the speaker and transferring it out either by air or liquid.

This not only keeps the S-DJ50X from overheating but also removes any annoying humming sounds that many speakers are likely to deal with.

Final Thoughts – Is it Worth Your Time?

The Pioneer DJ S-DJ50X is both an easy and difficult speaker to quantify.

On one hand, it’s a perfect size and weight for just about anyone to cart around with you, regardless of the situation or occasion.

Weighing in at just under 15 lbs., the S-DJ50X is great for anyone looking for a compact speaker that they can put on their shelf or next to them for optimal sound enjoyment, especially if you’re in the studio as a DJ working on different tracks.

So, with that said, “Is the Pioneer S-DJ50X worth your time?”

Overall, I’d have to say, yes it is worth your time… but only if you’re in a certain category.

If you’re someone that is just starting and want a good, solid, and workable speaker, there are a lot of benefits going for the S-DJ50X.

If, on the other hand, you’re someone that is a bit more experienced and has the means for a more advanced or complete setup, then you should only consider the S-DJ50X as more of a backup or accessory option instead of anything essential.

What Others Have Said

When looking at the S-DJ50X, there is a lot of positive chatter about it, particularly amongst its target demographic.

For beginning DJs and those just starting their journey into a more refined musical world, it seems like the S-DJ50X is just about perfect.

Although it comes as a singular speaker rather than as a set, fans love the fact that its sound is as good as it is despite the affordable price and small size.

The consensus is that one speaker is plenty for the vast majority of events or situations a person may deal with, only potentially becoming a problem for larger spaces or in open-air settings with huge crowds.

Pioneers S-DJ50X: The Verdict

While there are other speakers out there that do offer more traits than the Pioneer S-DJ50X, they’re just as likely going to cost a considerable amount more.

Put simply, no, these aren’t the best speakers on the market.

However, they don’t need to be. If you’re someone that is just starting to DJ, or currently interested in adding to your current DJ collection, the Pioneer S-DJ50X is something you really should consider checking out.
